Are You Prepared For Management?

Here are some thoughts for you to consider as you contemplate your move up the management ladder.

A good manager has confidence not only in themselves but also in their abilities. They must also be seen as willing to learn more and improve – a know-all who is good at barking orders to staff to do things they are not prepared to do themselves as a manager, will quickly find themselves becoming both unpopular and resented.

A manager has to be inspirational and a leader in order to enthuse their staff and gain their respect. They also have to be up-front and totally honest as well as dependable and consistent in order to gain their trust as well. One of the most valuable attributes a manager can have is being able to accept input from, and offer feedback to, the members of the team, while at the same time not shrinking from making decisions – both thought-out ones and on-the-spur of the moment.

A good manager must also thoroughly understand the business, its goals and objectives. They must be positive, interested, motivational and enthusiastic, with a sensible can-do attitude, able to interact at all times with a variety of people – in other words, a good communicator, listener, manager of conflict and a problem-solver. They should also be able to delegate sensibly, as opposed to abrogating responsibilities in order to get out on the golf course.

Good management is a skill that is learned. People are certainly not born good managers and the skills must be practiced the same as any other skill. One very important tip is to learn all you can about management. There are literally (no pun intended!) hundreds of good books on management to chose from. A good place to start is “One Minute Manager” by Ken Blanchard.

And of course, a good manager must not only look the part, but be able to manage themselves, their time and their responsibilities, regardless of the consequences.
