Delegating Tasks at Work

Delegation is one of the most important things you can learn if you want to achieve success. Most successful leaders and managers owe much of their success to the fact that they surround themselves with capable people to whom they can delegate various tasks. Although some people feel that delegation is “passing the buck” as far as work goes, in reality it can be one of the best ways of insuring that things get done in a correct and timely manner.
Delegating is often one of the skills that new managers find to be most difficult. Many people feel that by delegating a task, they lose some control over it. Additionally, if a person is accustomed to doing the work themselves, it can feel awkward to assign the task to somebody else.
It’s important to realize that by delegating various parts of any given project, you are actually giving more people a chance to apply their expertise and gain more experience. As long as you explain the project completely and choose individuals who you feel are well-suited for the various tasks, you will probably be pleasantly surprised how much easier the project becomes.
Entrepreneurs face the problem of having to delegate tasks to other people all of the time. These individuals tend to have a hard time letting go and must always feel like they are in control of everything going on with their business. In order to take it to the next level, however, they need to hire new employees or consultants and let them do some of the tasks. The trust must be there or else none of the work will ever get done effectively.
Of course, before delegating tasks, you owe it to yourself and the person you are trusting with the task to be sure they understand all the details and feel that they are indeed able to complete what needs to be done. If you’ve delegated a number of project tasks, it is also important to have regular status meetings to insure that everything is progressing as planned.
However, as long as everything is going smoothly, it is important to put your trust in those you have delegated tasks to, and resist the urge to micromanage. Instead, now that you have been relieved of some of the work, utilize the time wisely by focusing on the parts of the project that you can personally do best.
