Measurements With a Face

KPI Measurements have proven to be beneficial in measuring an organizations progress towards meeting its goals. Management, aware of these goals, strives to implement strategies, standardize processes, and encourage staff to make them a reality. What about the measurements themselves? Is each team member aware of what is being measured and the important part they play in completing the goals? There is a positive benefit to sharing what and why of the measurement as well as the resulting data.
In the Procurement arena, data is gathered and compiled on a daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis for expenditures, turnaround time, bids, contracts, savings, etc. The information is then documented, reported, and submitted to management. Historically these measurements have been used in a negative manner to point out deficiencies in department performance. However, that same data can have a positive influence when shared among the staff responsible for the outcome of the measurements. The reason for the measurement and the possible impact it can have on the organization and why it is being measured provides a better understanding of the measurements’ importance. Viewing the statistics in black and white provides a unique perspective, self awareness of intrinsic job value, and reinforces a positive work environment for all staff.
The KPI Measurements not only provide kudos for individual job performance it also prompts an increase in production regarding turnaround time for purchase orders and continued increased savings through the bid and quote process. The end result of sharing measured data impacted staff self-worth and improved teamwork. There is a face behind the measurements.
