The challenge of leadership requires the right combination of qualities and skills. Valuable qualities like honesty, integrity, compassion, humility can be latent in a person. But to be a good leader, you need to stretch beyond. You need to develop leadership skills and maintain a strong focus. You need to follow an excellent action plan and find ways to meet the challenges demands which leaders face. As Henry D. Thoreau rightly said, “In the long run, leaders hit only what they aim at. Therefore they better aim at something high.”

Let us look into some of the important techniques of leadership:

* Develop Skills:

A good leader makes the most of every opportunity to train, teach, and develop a full range of leadership skills. Equally important would be to develop a strong drive to succeed and excel in his performance. He endeavors to channel his energy in the right direction by handling challenging tasks. By plugging in a winning mindset, he would strive to have an extra edge over others. The combination of one’s character, personality and inherent qualities all come into play while revitalizing leadership skills.

* Hard Work and Self-Motivation:

As a leader, he is aware that to be on the top of the ladder, continuous hard work is crucial. At the beginning of this quest, he does his utmost to tap all his inner resources-knowing fully well that intelligence alone would not suffice. Fierce determination and vibrant passion are aids to forge ahead. Self-discipline and perseverance can make it happen. Creating a solid belief system helps him to be self-motivated and lead him closer to achieving his goals. Self-motivational tools are the key factors.

* Task Management:

It is of vital importance that the key persons believe in their leader. To successfully complete a task, planning meticulously helps. In accomplishing a task, he openly acknowledges the strengths of his team members while motivating them to success. He responds positively in all situations and emerges as an expert on ‘task management.’ In managing the process, the leader leads his team with finesse and becomes adept at dealing effectively with people.

* Public Relation skills:

In any organization, it’s the job of the leader to treat everyone with the same respect and courtesy and make sure to convey to his teammates how important each of their roles is to the organization. It is therefore of great importance that a good leader gives constant attention to dealing effectively with the human element. He needs to manifest an ability to get along well with people at all levels and under all circumstances. He needs to be appropriately accessible and listen attentively; be open to suggestions and always ready to incorporate fresh ideas. He accepts the point of view of others and welcomes change.

* Problem Solving Skills:

In high-pressure situations, the leader swiftly rises to the occasion. He knows that learning from life’s positive and negative experiences nurtures self-growth. He has an-inbuilt inner resiliency, an ability to bounce back after any crisis and turn it into a positive learning experience. He demonstrates boldness in taking responsibility and maintains self-discipline in taking important decisions. He creates a solid belief system in his team with “You can do anything” to develop an “I can” attitude in his teammates. He is aware that bigger challenges at work help raise the bar and push him to greater heights of achievement. At this point it may be noted that the richest man in the world, the renowned Bill Gates of Microsoft, regarded problem solving as highly challenging and motivational.

* Communicative Skills:

Good communication is vital for a leader’s development and begins with good preparation. Effective communication that is based upon trust reaps a rich harvest. Being aware that their leader is genuinely concerned about their welfare, his teammates willingly trust his judgment and look forward to his encouragement. By communicating the value of self-education, a good leader helps his team mates to develop and succeed. Right listening techniques keeps the leader informed of the latest developments and conveys the message of ‘good-will.’ Through a variety of ways like posture, clothes, grooming, and life-style, a leader can yield a powerful influence on his team mates.

* Inspirational skills:

This is another important skill a leader can acquire. An effective leader is ever ready to support, encourage and inspire his teammates. He empowers them to succeed under any circumstances. He is ever ready to extend a steady hand to any team member who is reaching out or just trying to hang on. He actively demonstrates to his team how to achieve their very best and inspires them to achieve their short and long-term goals. In the bargain, he earns the utmost respect from his teammates without demanding it.

The power to ‘lead’ merits the highest approbation. To be a leader is a mark of distinction. It is a measure of highest achievement. A good leader wins admiration and exudes warmth. One’s character, one’s personality and one’s principles—all directly come into play. Fame and riches alone cannot stimulate one’s intrinsic motivation. Self-motivational tools are the key factors. Leadership is not simply about making money. It is about creating inner wealth. It is about uplifting humanity and serving others. For this, one needs a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.
